HISTORY

The seniors living in the south shore area had their wishes and prayers answered when the South Milwaukee Senior Center was opened and dedicated in February of 1982. The Senior Center, formerly Parkway Elementary School, has served the needs of many during the past 27 years. It has given older adults diversion providing educational, cultural, physical, social and recreational programs. The Senior Center was started with the hard work of Mary Staffold, who initially had a group called "The Golden Agers". That group met in the basement of the South Milwaukee Library. With the help of the Community Block Grants, the Senior Center became a reality for her and others. She was the director from 1982 to August 1984. Theresa Bellone was the director from 1

984 to May of 1990. The current director since June of 1990 is Sandra Quinlan. She continues the legacy of hard work and dedication to the seniors of the community.

In May of 1996, the Senior Center name was changed to the Chester W. Grobschmidt Senior Center. It was Mayor Grobschmidt and City Administrator Norb Theine, who eagerly filled out the federal and state grant application forms the Friday after Thanksgiving in 1979. After Mayor Grobschmidt retired, it appeared only appropriate to name the Center after him. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

NUTRITION NEWS 1999 brought some new faces and changes to the South Milwaukee Nutrition Site. Under the direction of Interfaith, the services that are provided are more "participant friendly". Participants of the program are able to sign up for their lunches in person either in the morning or the afternoon. A new dedicated phone line was installed and people are able to call in their reservations over the phone. All senior adults are invited and encouraged to attend this luncheon program. Participants need to be at least 60 years of age. Spouses can be any age. The suggested cost of this well balanced, delicious meal is $2.00. The menus are printed in the Wednesday food section of the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel, in the CNI Newspaper, and in the Senior Center monthly newsletter. All seniors are invited to join us at the center.

The Senior Center is one of 27 Milwaukee County Nutrition Sites. Meals are served at 11:30 AM.

FUNDRAISING The Senior Center is enrolled in the "We Care" program at Pick N Save. The program is easy and is an excellent fundraiser for the senior center. Simply fill out a new Advantage Saver's Club application at any Pick N Save store and designate the senior center as the organization you wish to give to. The senior center's number is 298700. The computer will automatically add up the money for the center and a check will be sent quarterly. The center receives 1% of every $1,000.00 of receipts.
