HISTORY
Health services are provided to all residents. The staff that provides these services includes one Public Health Administrator (Health Officer/Nursing Supervisor), four Public Health Nurses, an Environmental Health Specialist, and a Clerk, who serve under a part-time Medical Advisor. The South Milwaukee Board of Health, which is a voluntary board comprised of citizens from South Milwaukee that are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council is comprised of six citizens, the Public Health Administrator, Medical Advisor, and a liaison from the Common Council.
HOW DO I CONTACT THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT?
The South Milwaukee Health Department is open Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm, unless there is an observance for a holiday. We can be reached at 414-768-8055. If you have an immediate public health concern after hours that you feel needs to be addressed, you can contact the South Milwaukee Police Department at 414-768-8060, and your message will be forwarded to a Health Department representative. If this is a medical emergency, please call 911 for emergency services.
PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING SERVICES
Health Information, monitoring, and assessment by a Public Health Nurse is available in the home by request or referral for South Milwaukee residents of all ages. Health information may also be requested over the telephone or by office appointment.
The Public Health Nurses provide home visits to high risk infants and mothers to assess their health status and progress, to discuss infant cares, growth and development, immunizations, and any other concerns that the parents or family may have. Other services offered by the public health nurse are home safety assessments for families with children and for the elderly, Ages and Stages Developmental Screening Assessments, including the Social/Emotional Screening Assessments, for children ages 3 months - 6 years. The Public Health Nurses receive client referrals from clients themselves, other City departments such as the Police and Fire departments, schools, hospitals, and physician offices.
The Health Department registers women for the Wisconsin Well Woman Program. This program offers breast and cervical health screenings including a mammogram, for women who are age and income eligible.
The Public Health Nurses provide service the schools in the community through providing consultation on general health concerns with students and for parents, and to staff at the schools. The Public Health Nurses provide immunization audits of all records; school based immunization clinics as needed, conduct vision and hearing screening and refers children in need of follow-up. The Public Health Nurses provide health education on topics that include nutrition, effects of tobacco use, growth and development and hygiene, on request.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASE CONTROL
Wisconsin State Law requires the reporting of all communicable disease to the local health department for investigation and control. Examples of communicable disease include: chickenpox, measles, scarlet fever, scabies, ringworm, whooping cough (Pertussis), hepatitis, HIV, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Both the nursing staff and the environmental health specialist also do Foodborne and waterborne outbreak investigations.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM
Food Y Recreational Licensing: the Registered Sanitarian and the Health Officer enforce Sanitation regulations. The South Milwaukee Health Department is an agent for the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services and Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection and has the authority to license and inspect retail food establishments, swimming pools, hotels, rooming houses, taverns, and restaurants.
Human Health & Nuisance Complaints: the health department will investigate Concerns on public/private property regarding unsanitary conditions, potential harborage of rodents, etc. The Registered Sanitarian will investigate complaints from citizens regarding blight caused by a human health hazard or nuisance. Orders to correct conditions will be issued to the property owners that are in violation of the City's Municipal Ordinances. If these conditions are not corrected, a citation may be issued.
Rabies Control: Under Wisconsin state law, the local health officer shall require any dog or cat that bites a person be quarantined for 10 days so that it can be observed for signs of Rabies. During the 10-day quarantine period, the dog or cat will need to be examined by a licensed veterinarian on the 1st day, the 10th day, and one intervening day of the quarantine period. Reminder: Dogs and Cats are required to be licensed annually. In order to license your dog or cat, it must be vaccinated against rabies.
West Nile Virus Control: Under this program the health department provides West Nile Virus mosquito surveillance and control activities. The health department monitors sick and dead corvids, May 1 to October 1, and logs this information into a statewide database. Mosquito larvicide is placed in catch basins and areas of standing water in the public domain for mosquito control. The health officer and environmental health specialist conduct surveillance of mosquito larva and adult mosquitoes.
Beach Monitoring: Beach testing at Grant Park Beach is conducted between the months of June and September. The water is tested for high levels of the E.Coli bacteria and the beach is posted for swimming appropriately. The results of the testing can also be found at the beach website: www.wibeaches.us
WEIGHTS & MEASURES PROGRAM
The City Sealer enforces Weights & Measures regulations. City Sealers play a vital role in protecting the consumer and maintaining an equitable market place between businesses. Each year all commercial weights and measures devices (scales, gas pumps, scanners, and timing devices are checked for accuracy.) A City Seal is then affixed to approved devices.
Products that are sold by weight and measure are also tested. Short weight or mislabeled products are removed from sale and sent back to the distributor or manufacturer. Scaled and weights used by the Weights & Measures Program are tested and certified by the state Metrology Lab.
By monitoring the accuracy of gas station pumps, grocery store packages, scales, and checkout scanners, the weights and measures program saves an average Wisconsin family up to $500 a year.

BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING
Public Health Nurses do blood pressure screening during the cholesterol clinics and any day by appointment. This is a free service.
CHOLESTEROL SCREENING
Cholesterol Screening is done 6 times a year on the 3rd Wednesday of January, March, May, July, September, and November between 8:30am and 11:30am. There is a cost for this service based on the cost of screening supplies.
LEAD SCREENING
Testing for lead in the blood is offered for children age 1-5 years. In addition to the lead testing information about lead poisoning and identifying lead hazards in the home is available from the health department. A home lead hazard investigation is done when a child has an elevated blood lead level as mandated by the State of Wisconsin, Department of Health Services. This service is also available upon request for a fee, for families that have a concern about lead hazards in their home.
IMMUNIZATION CLINICS
The Health Department offers immunization clinics for children and adults on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month with appointments starting at 2:00pm. The recommended vaccinations for children and infants are provided free of charge for South Milwaukee residents. Adult vaccinations are available and may have a fee associated with them.
